It has troubled me for some time that these three terms are so often confused in news reports, simply because they are nearly synonymous. There are important distinctions, however, and it will pay to keep them in mind when reading or writing the news.
"Conservative " is almost not intrinsically pejorative. It connotes restraint, care and reflection in as perceived in the perspective of the speaker. The problem comes when it is applied to moronic ideas and logically inconsistent arguments like the Bush answer to a maverick reporter asking why neither UN inspectors nor US officials had offered any specifics about Hussein's WMD: "We know what a disarmed country looks like, and Iraq doesn't look like that."
