...doesn't exist. Not talking here about rights of the kind that certain of them are unalienable, but of just one right, namely The Right. It pokes its imaginary head into all kinds of discourse conjured up by the equally conjured Left. I don't much care about The Left, but The Right is different. Although neither exists, The Right is less real because of its overall unreality. It is also incoherenter than the nonexistent Left, which is not so much incoherent as diverse.
What I mean in more literal terms is this: bundling together the various harebrained diatribes spewed into the world by the various harebrains currently holding office in Washington and in Sacramento does not bring them into any kind of structural harmony. What unites them is their common shrillness and the scent or stink, depending on ripeness, of paranoia that floats like an emanation around their disordered logic. It's better not to decry The Right. It exists now only the way the universe did at the time of the Big Bang, when it began its existence at the fringe of the visible Universe, from which it seems to be rushing away at an increasing velocity. Let it go.
