At Whatever It Is, I'm Against It we find more than horsefeathers. We have a nice analysis of the simple language used by the President to veil the chaotic confusion of his thought processes, complete with the Orwellian twist of saying the opposite of what he thinks, namely that he "understands". Anyone who saw poor Helen Thomas struggling against a mighty wave of presidential understanding in her futile attempt to extract the current American excuse for violating the Nuremberg and United Nations charters with an aggressive war in Iraq got a refresher on that this week.
I think we need to assign linguists to parse the President's utterances if only to know where our young people are apt to be sent to kill and die in the near future. By now, for example, we should know that "I understand" really means something like "I hear that". Or maybe, "I don't care whether or not it's true that".
